Lunar New Year is here! It’s a time of fresh starts, family gatherings, and celebrating traditions that go back thousands of years. Unlike the Western calendar’s January 1st reset, Lunar New Year follows the cycles of the moon. That’s why the date changes each year. In 2025, the celebration begins on January 29 and welcomes the Year of the Snake.

A Tradition Rooted in Time

The Lunar New Year is widely observed across China, Vietnam, Korea, and many other countries. Each year is tied to an animal in the Chinese zodiac, rotating through a 12-year cycle. Snakes are known for their intelligence, intuition, and transformation. If you were born in a Snake year, this might be a year of growth and wisdom for you!

While I did not grow up celebrating the Lunar New Year, I learned so much about it when I worked for a Chinese-owned company in San Francisco. My co-workers took the holiday seriously—decorating the office, sharing festive treats, and explaining traditions to me. I remember receiving my first red envelope, feeling the excitement of the celebrations, and realizing how deeply meaningful this time of year is for so many people. It was a fascinating introduction to a rich cultural tradition. And since then we have found our own way of celebrating this time of year in our home.
