Things That Earn Their Place

I have a complicated relationship with big sale events.

I like a good deal, especially on something I already needed. But big sales are also very good at making urgency feel like value. Suddenly, a travel gadget I had never considered is 35% off and somehow feels essential. So I have become more selective.

These days I am less interested in what is trending and more interested in what earns a place in the bag: the things we reach for trip after trip, the ones that solve a real problem, the ones that make travel lighter instead of heavier. (See highlighted section below)

That is how I am approaching Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days this week, along with the other retailers running sales alongside it. Not as an excuse to fill a cart, but as a reason to revisit what still makes sense in 2026.

KEEP ME GOING⚡

Anker Nano Power Bank 10K, 45W This is the kind of 2026 upgrade I like. It has a built-in retractable USB-C cable, enough power for a long travel day, and one less cord to remember. My phone is now my boarding pass, map, camera, wallet, translator, and entertainment system, so a dead battery is no longer a minor inconvenience.

EPICKA GaN Universal Travel Adapter For international travel, I want one adapter doing as much work as possible. This newer GaN version combines worldwide plug compatibility with multiple USB-C and USB-A ports and up to 70W charging. Translation: fewer bricks and fewer things scattered around a hotel room.

Twelve South AirFly Pro 2 One of those gadgets that sounds unnecessary until you use it. Plug it into the airplane’s headphone jack and listen to the seatback entertainment through your own Bluetooth headphones. No airline earbuds. No wire dangling across your tray table. It is tiny enough to justify bringing along.

KEEP TRACK OF MY STUFF 🧳

Bluetooth luggage trackers — preferably one in every checked bag. Still one of the easiest travel recommendations to make. Trackers remain tiny, low-maintenance and genuinely useful when your luggage decides to take a different itinerary from yours. Apple updated AirTag in 2026 with improved range and a louder speaker, while Android travelers have strong alternatives such as Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag, Motorola’s Moto Tag, and Chipolo trackers. The best choice really comes down to the phone you carry.

MAKE IT FIT 📦

BAGSMART Compression Packing Cubes Packing cubes are hardly new. Compression packing cubes, though, make an old favorite more useful—particularly if you are trying to stay carry-on only. Travel + Leisure still rates BAGSMART among its top tested travel accessories for 2026.

Hanging toiletry bag Particularly good for smaller European bathrooms, cruises, and hotels with approximately four square inches of counter space. Current 2026 travel-accessory roundups continue to rate hanging organizers highly.

PLANE MODE IMPROVED 🎧

Cabeau Evolution S3 neck pillow Travel pillows are personal, but I like that this one actually attaches to the seat headrest rather than relying entirely on a doughnut around your neck. That helps control the dreaded head-drop during a long flight.

Loop Quiet 2 Earplugs Flights. Hotels. Trains. A room overlooking the lively part of town that was much more charming at 6 p.m. than it is at 2 a.m. Tiny enough to live permanently in the travel bag. They also continue to show up on 2026 frequent-traveler lists.

WHY DIDN’T I PACK THIS BEFORE?

Tiny Things, Big Wins ✨

Riemot luggage cup holder Conveniently slips over the suitcase handle and gives you somewhere to put coffee, a water bottle, phone, or passport while navigating the airport. Frequent travelers continue to recommend it in 2026.

Built-in retractable USB-C cable One less cord to remember. My phone is now my boarding pass, map, camera, wallet, translator and in-flight cinema, so a dead battery is no longer a minor inconvenience.

Etekcity digital luggage scale This is the decidedly unglamorous item you will congratulate yourself for packing when the suitcase suddenly weighs far more coming home than it did leaving. Especially after shopping. Or bringing home “just a few” bottles of something.

Portable fan Hear me out. A small rechargeable Jisulife-style fan can be useful on hot trains, outdoor queues, stuffy hotel rooms, or anywhere air-conditioning is more theoretical than actual. It is showing up increasingly on 2026 frequent-traveler packing lists.

Old School, On Purpose

A travel document organizer. My phone holds almost everything now, which is exactly why the few paper things deserve one home: passports, a printed confirmation for when the app won't load, the arrival card, and a pen that is actually there when you need it. Something slim with a pen loop is plenty. We keep both passports in one.

A good book. Every trip has its waiting: the delayed gate, the long train, the quiet hour before dinner. I like filling it with something that isn't my phone. A Kindle Paperwhite is a reliable sale pick. If you would rather turn real pages, Alain de Botton's The Art of Travel is a small, lovely meditation on why we go anywhere at all. The best travel finds are not always the newest, flashiest, or most deeply discounted. They are the ones that keep showing up for you, trip after trip. So if Prime Big Deal Days—or any of the other sales happening alongside it—puts one of these favorites at a better price, great. Just make sure it earns the space. Because the bag always fills up. The good stuff should be worth carrying.
